Some very cool stuff is happening at one of our carbon offset projects, the Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority landfill in south-central Pennsylvania.

The GLRA project captures landfill methane, the fourth-largest source of US anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (see this handy EPA fact sheet; all fossil fuel combustion is lumped into one source category). The project prevents methane from escaping the landfill by sucking it into pipes and pumping it into electricity generators which destroy the methane and finally send power to the grid. The Green Valley Dairy in Wisconsin is using an anaerobic digester to turn farm waste into a renewable source of electricity and heat. Prior to the project, the manure on this farm was stored in open lagoons and seasonally applied to fields as fertilizer.
